East Sussex County Council has
already committed £12 million
towards the construction of
phase two, which will support
the relocation of existing port
activities closer to the Harbour
mouth, unlocking employment
space to the north of the port.
The South East Local
Enterprise Partnership (SELEP)
The South East Local Enterprise
Partnership (SELEP) brings
together key leaders from business,
local government, further and
higher education in order to create
the most enterprising economy
in England through exploring
opportunities for enterprise while
addressing barriers to growth.
Covering Essex, Kent and East
Sussex it is the largest strategic
enterprise partnership outside
of London.
In July 2014, the Government
announced an investment in the
SELEP area through its new
'Growth Deal', with £54.6 million
for East Sussex. SELEP has
developed plans to generate
200,000 private sector jobs,
100,000 new homes and transform
transport and business
infrastructure in the SELEP
area over the next seven years.
The Growth Deal will initially see
a £7 million investment in East
Sussex during 2015/16, primarily
for projects to improve the local
transport network, including
sustainable transport and new
walking and cycling packages,
and improving flood defences
in Newhaven. This will later be
followed by a further £59 million
for transport improvements
including the A22/A27 junction
and the Queensway gateway
road. Newhaven is also set to
benefit from £10 million towards
the Port Access Road, through
the Coast 2 Capital Growth Deal.
The SELEP Growth Deal brings
national and local investment
together and includes commitments
to increase the pace of housing
construction; coordinate local
and national business support
services; establish a new property
investment fund; and deliver a
considerable programme of local
transport initiatives. Crucially,
the Growth Deal also secures a
commitment from the
Government to boost local
growth by improving our national
transport links.

This corridor includes land in
Uckfield for business growth,
housing and employment sites
in Hailsham and Polegate.
Sovereign Harbour in Eastbourne
contains two key linked sites and
the new Innovation Centre.
All these sites are served by the
A22 and are being promoted in
adopted local plans and are
available now for development.
Newhaven Clean Tech and
Maritime Growth Corridor:
The under-exploited port at
Newhaven hosts a ferry service
to Dieppe, and offers an
opportunity to develop both
passenger and freight services,
environmental and Clean Tech
technologies, and maritime
activities. Newhaven also has
significant potential to deliver
growth as part of the Greater
Brighton City Deal.
The town offers potential to
become a Clean Tech and
Maritime Growth Corridor.
This will capitalise on proposed
investments from E.ON in its
operations and maintenance
base for Rampion Offshore Wind
Farm (OWF), the proposals for
Veolia in its Energy Recovery
Facility and proposals for a new
University Technical College
specialising in marine and
environmental engineering,
due to open in September 2015.
Newhaven Port and Properties
(part of port owners Societe
d’Economie Mixte Locale) has
developed a Masterplan to
increase the volume of trade
through the port, establish this
renewable energy cluster, and
support the development of the
fishing and marine leisure sectors.
The Newhaven Port Access
Road’s first phase is funded and
currently being constructed.
